A prominent Gaborone businessman and Botswana Democratic Party publicity committee member, Olebeng Ngwakwena was last week dragged before the High Court to answer for a child maintenance charge.
Court papers indicated that the Belshane property Group Company Director was brought to court after a DNA test conducted late last year confirmed that he was the biological father of a 7-year- old son he had rejected.
Court papers filed by his former girlfriend Itseng Rapuleng showed that for the first 3 months of the baby’s life, Ngwakwena was very supportive and regularly visited the baby and even provided for its needs.
Rapuleng further stated in her court submissions that “Afterward, the respondent’s behaviour drastically changed and he slacked in his responsibilities.
I, on the 18th December 2006, through electronic mail communicated the needs of the baby to the respondent and on several occasions reminded him of the expenditures of the child but he simply ignored to provide for his child.”
The documents further allege that following a series of emails to Ngwakwena reminding him of his son he gave the child’s mother P200.00 in February 2007 and another P200.00 in April the same year and thereafter he completely stopped even coming to check on the baby.”
The politician cum businessman whose company has been winning some major property and investment tenders from government told the court that he earns P4000.00 a month only and therefore could not afford to provide much for the child.
“No issue arise save to concede that the applicant has more means than myself and has only one dependant whereas I have dependants from my previous marriage and my current marriage on top of our child,” he said in his defence.
The case is expected to resume next month.
