A jealous boyfriend who had qualms about his girlfriend getting married to her ex-boyfriend and father to her child shot her dead before turning the barrel on himself in Maun last week.
Guyapo Neo Kapolelo from Kumaga village was shot dead in the tragic incident that had all the hallmarks of a passion killing by her boyfriend Albert Gaoduelwe of the same village a week ago and the couple was buried side by side on Sunday.
According to Vincent Gaoduelwe, the brother to Albert, problems started after Kapolelo delivered news that the father of her baby was back in the country from studies in Australia and wanted to marry her.
He said that the news did not go well with Albert who all along was planning the same thing after being dumped some time back.
“The two were a happy couple until Kapolelo got pregnant and dumped my brother but she later received a message from her boyfriend asking her to look for a boyfriend as he had found another woman in Australia.”
The 25 year old man said that after getting the news, Kapolelo and Albert got back together and shared a room in Borolong Ward in Maun where they were found dead.
He said that things were fine until the former boyfriend came back from overseas and demanded to marry Kapolelo.
“That affected my brother but I did not think that as a Christian (ZCC) he could go to an extent of committing such a crime.”
On that fateful night, Gaoduelwe said that he started to get suspicious when his brother started sending him a list of all the people who owe their leather and tents workshop.
He said that after sending the list he sent a number of Church songs and later sent a message asking him not to do what he has done.
“When I tried his phone it went off but I later received a call from the police who notified me about the tragedy.”
On the other side Thomphang Senamelo, the brother to Kapolelo confirmed that indeed the former boyfriend had requested to marry his sister.
He said that upon arrival the man who was introduced during the funeral as someone originating from Marapong village requested to see his daughter.
The 36 year old brother stated that a meeting was arranged by the family for the man to see his daughter in the presence of the parents but after doing that he made the marriage proposals.
He said that as family they were still in the process of calling another meeting but unfortunately her sister was killed before that could be done.
The 29 year old deceased woman was working as a supervisor at Fresh Exclusive Club in Maun and information from close friend is that she once complained of Albert’s behaviour.
“She told us that sometimes she would wake up at night only to find Albert crying and writing letters and we advised her to consult her parents,” said a friend.
The friend added that there was a time Kapolelo told them that Albert had vowed that he would never let her go unless she brought him a girlfriend.
As someone who was shy and quite Kapolelo is said to have consulted her family but no action was taken as the family did not take the threats seriously.
She was said to have gone further and consulted her extended family in Zoroga but her pleas fell on deaf ears.
With the marriage meeting day approaching, Albert is said to have taken a ride to Kumaga where he stole his uncle’s gun and cut the barrel to avoid the prying eyes of police search at Makalamabedi gate and he managed to cross with it to Maun where he shot his girlfriend before shooting himself.
A source said that by the look of things at the scene, it seems the woman was trying to run away from the house not knowing that the house was locked because the house keys were found in the man’s pocket.
Senamelo said that one of his sisters received suspicious messages from Albert but when she tried to call her both her phones were off.
“We knew that something was wrong and we rushed there but upon arrival the house was locked.”
He said that they managed to find a view above the window and saw legs on the floor and they called the police.
Maun Police Station Commander Kenanao Badumetse confirmed handling the murder-suicide case.
He said that they suspect that the 30 year old deceased man could be the one who fired the shots as the gun belonged to his uncle.
The man who had proposed marriage refused to talk to this publication after the funeral except telling the reporter to be careful.
