TALKING REINSURANCE: Rimai and Tavonesa

FMRE Property and Casualty Botswana (FMRE) on Tuesday hosted the local media in a training workshop on reinsurance.

The training enlightened the media on the practice of reinsurance in Botswana and globally.

It also provided an overview on how reinsurance should be evaluated and the factors that influence the purchase of reinsurance.

Some focus was given as an overview of global reinsurance and relevance in the Botswana economy.

“FMRE realises the importance of the media in Botswana as they are very instrumental in educating and disseminating information to corporations, government and the public at large. Driven by this realisation, we see it fit to generate awareness on the salient aspects of reinsurance,” said Principal Officer for FMRE P&C Botswana Samuel Rimai.

Rimai highlighted that the reason for the media training was that to the public, the concept of reinsurance may be relatively new in Botswana even though the practice itself was not new in the country, mostly with external partners.

He added that this may have been made so due to a lack of a resident reinsurer prior to 2010.

“As a company, we want to promote discussion on the subject of insurance and reinsurance as the two are material pillars of any vibrant economy. We also want to promote interest in the subject of reinsurance in secondary schools and tertiary institutions by using the media as a vehicle that drives this interest by generating awareness,” concluded Rimai.
