A student teacher at Tonota College of Education (TCE) last Saturday night committed suicide after she apparently fell out with her parents in a row over bride price (bogadi).
The student, identified as Magdalene Messiah Ntebola, 29, from Tutume village was in the second year of a three-year Diploma in Secondary Education.
Ntebola’s decomposing body was found hanging from the rafters at her lodgings on Monday morning and was buried at her home village on Tuesday afternoon.
A close friend to the dead girl revealed that she was upset following a heated quarrel with her parents over bride price, accusing them of overcharging her fiancés parents who had gone to Tutume to discuss the matter.
“The bitter argument between Ntebola and her parents took place in front of the other family.
It was a nasty experience. People are supposed to be happy that the lady had finally found a soul mate.
But it was the other way round,” the friend said.
The source described her friend as a reserved and quiet person.
Tonota Police Station Commander, Superintendent Robson Maleka confirmed that the deceased left a suicide note but declined to discuss its contents since investigations were still ongoing.
