Business Minded: Mokotedi

Ronnie Mokotedi is living his childhood dream of participating in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Mokotedi, who graduated with a degree in Tourism Management from the Johnson and Wales University is the MD of White Palace Hotel and Spa in Serowe and Francistown.

“I have always wanted to be involved in tourism and hospitality.

That is why I studied tourism management and worked for a while in the industry before branching out on his own,” he told Your Money.

Realising the importance of getting some experience Mokotedi took on several jobs before starting his own operation.

A year after graduating he joined the Department of Tourism where he worked for three years as a Tourism Officer.

In 2006 he left and joined the Botswana Tourism Board where he worked for three years before being promoted to Tourism Officer based in Francistown.

The bug to set up his own establishment eventually bit too hard and he started the hotel and spa business in Serowe.

Quizzed on why he chose Serowe  Mokotedi said that he did some research and realised that there was a niche for his kind business in that village.

“Serowe is a big village with a lot of potential. There is need for conference facilities and accommodation and I realised I could not go wrong. I am happy with my decision because the business is doing pretty well,” he said.

His next stop was Selepa, Francistown which he says he chose because it is a stop over for a lot of people on business and pleasure trips.

“A lot of people travelling from other countries stop in Francistown which is good for the hospitality business. The place is also central for business people and the government in the north and this will benefit my business.

Francistown is the most convenient place where people can meet for their conferences” Mokotedi  told Your Money.

The hospitality business buff went on to say he has plans to expand his business further. He draws inspiration from his friends, Praful Jog of Adansonia Hotel and Professor Matenge.

“Jog always encourages me not to give up and gives me the inside knowledge because he has experience in the industry. Matenge is this friend who can discuss things with me honestly.

With their support nothing can stop me.”

His expansion plans include seeing the White Palace Hotel and Spa operating in Nata, Gweta and eventually hit the big tourist turfs of Maun and Kasane.

“My plan is to grow this childhood dream as big as I can.  Besides making a mark in the local tourist market I have plans to take White Palace outside our borders in the future,” the ambitious Mokotedi intimated in conclusion.
