Botswana Confederation of Commerce Industry and Manpower (BOCCIM) held their annual budget review this week in Francistown.
Every year following the budget speech the north region BOCCIM hosts reviews in its different constituencies.
Addressing participants at the review,BOCCIM north region office manager, Letus Chinyepi said the event can be used as a round table at which the national budget is presented and scrutinized by the business community.
“Participants are given a platform to discuss and provide their views and suggestions which BOCCIM will then relay to the relevant decision makers.
I am impressed by the turn out for this session and I hope it will be the same in other areas as from here we will be going to Selibi- Phikwe, Palapye, Maun and Kasane.
We are the voice of business and that is why we are doing this on your behalf so that your views can be heard.” Said Chinyepi
One of the participants Kabo Moseki said that the current budget was the worst and most uninspiring that ever happened to Botswana.
He suggested that BOCCIM should consult before the preparation of the budget speech so that their suggestions could be taken to the relevant authorities.
“This budget has failed to address pertinent issues like the issue of land which is difficult to acquire and has often shattered many young people’s dreams to start businesses,” Moseki noted.
“Citizen participation is also not clarified, we still see foreign companies dominating the mining and construction sectors.
I think it is high time there is a policy that regulates awarding of tenders to make sure that local companies get their fair share and are not disadvantaged by underhanded way of doing business.”
“The budget has failed to both address economic diversification and to discuss a way forward. ” Said Moseki
