Mother of six dies instantly
A council worker died instantly when she was trapped inside a concrete mixer in a horrific accident that left fellow workers traumatised.
Stunned colleagues at a Francistown City Council poverty alleviation project described hearing the woman’s terrifying screams as the machine was accidently turned on with the worker still inside.
The 59-year-old mother of six, Jane James met her untimely death after apparently climbing into the machine to remove a pebble that was preventing it from working. Fire Department officers later removed her lacerated body.
Eyewitnesses at the brick-moulding site situated at Somerset location revealed that the accident occurred in the morning when Jane got into the machine trying to clean it following a power failure.
“I don’t want to imagine how a normal pleasant working day turned so horrible. It is a nightmare. We all ran away as the machine spun round with Jane inside screaming for help. I will live with the chilling sound of those screams for the rest of my life,” a fellow colleague who preferred not to be named said.
“The circumstances surrounding the tragic accident are still not clear to us, but it seems a misunderstanding occurred and the operator mistakenly turned the machine on thinking that she was actually turning it off.
Grieving husband Buzwani James, 63, said: “I am devastated. I still can’t come to terms with the fact that Jane is dead. The way in which she died is horrific and I am still to understand how the accident happened since we have not yet received the police report.”
The City of Francistown Public Relations Officer, Prisilla Gulubane Simula said it was not clear what could have caused the accident, but suspected that poor observation of safety precautions were to blame.
“Jane was working at the brick mouldering site after graduating from the government welfare programme as a destitute. We are deeply saddened at her loss and will do whatever we can to help the family.
Police are still investigating the matter to see what could have caused the accident,” the PRO said revealing that Jane was laid to rest at Gerald Estate over the weekend.
