South Africa based legal expenses insurer, Legal Wise has opened a branch in Gaborone.
The insurer specializes in offering its members the power to enforce and defend their rights through professional legal representation.
LegalWise Botswana is a wholly owned subsidiary of LegalWise South Africa.
Speaking during the launch on Tuesday, Divisonal Head of LegalWise Botswana, Fazel Ameen said the launch is in response to a growing demand and need for legal expenses insurance in the country.
More and more people in Botswana are finding themselves battling inheritance, family, land and other disputes without proper legal guidance as they are unable to afford good legal representation, said Ameen.
“People are afraid not only of the costs, length and uncertain outcome of court proceedings, but also of the costs of legal representation.
As a consequence, a lot of people do not even try to assert their rights. By contrast, those who take out LegalWise membership will be assisted by a Legal Counsellor either face-to-face in the branch or telephonically or through an external lawyer,” he said.
Senior Legal Counsel at LegalWise Botswana, Tshepiso Mongwa highlighted the fact that LegalWise offers support for its members by providing legal advice and covering legal fees, regardless of whether the member is the claimant or the defendant.
She also stated that the insurer not only covers the primary member, but also their spouse or partner and all children under the age of 18 or 21 if they are studying fulltime at a school, college or university.
She further explained that for P79.00 per month LegalWise members have access to legal assistance for civil, criminal and labour related matters, including family matters such as divorce and child maintenance, consultations with Legal Counsels and up to P79 000 cover for attorney fees per matter.
Mongwa urged people living in Botswana to take their legal rights seriously.
“There is no reason for your legal costs to cripple you, nor should you be afraid to actively pursue your rights.
LegalWise will answer any legal questions that you might have, so make use of our 24 helpline,” she said.
LegalWise also offers access to LegalWise Branches and payment of legal expenses for covered matters whilst visiting or staying temporarily in South Africa.
Jan Luwes, Chief Executive Officer, Legal Expenses Insurance Southern Africa Limited and champion of the evolution of legal protection insurance across Africa, said they are building a strong team in Botswana and look forward to watching the company grow.
The insurer was licensed to operate as an insurance broker in October 2012 by Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority (NBFIRA).
