Botswana National Front president, Duma Boko had the last laugh on Wednesday as a Lobatse High Court Judge, Michael Leburu dismissed with costs an urgent application where his presidency was being challenged.
A member of the Botswana National Front (BNF), Rex Seharane wanted the courts to declare vacant position of the party president held by Boko and that of information and publicity secretary occupied by Moeti Mohwasa.
His argument was that Boko and Mohwasa have since joined a new party, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), thus invalidating their membership of the BNF.
Representing Boko and Mohwasa, attorney Mboki Chilisa told the court that most of the issues that Seharane brought to court had already been raised by former BNF member, Gabriel Kanjabanga, at different forums and had been dealt with democratically by party structures.
Kanjabanga who was representing Seharane argued that, Boko having joined the UDC and now its president, had terminated his membership of the BNF and was no longer a member in terms of clause 7.1 of the BNF constitution.”
The clause being invoked states: “Membership of the Botswana National Front shall terminate if a member resigns, or is expelled, or dies or joins another party.”
