If you are one of the many people who have managed to make significant changes to your lifestyle this year, you will understand how hard it is to stick to your goal.

Whether we are talking about going on a diet, quitting smoking, or giving up alcohol, the battle is longer than people think.

Once you have made the changes, you will inevitably be faced with challenges and temptations to lead you back into old behaviour.

The festive season is an especially hard time for many people who have given up substances such as drugs or alcohol. The key is to be prepared.

Here are some tips for preventing a relapse of your hard work this festive season:

  • Remember that relapse is a process, not an event. It doesn’t happen overnight so look out for the signs!
  • The holidays can be a stressful time: talk to friends and family about how you feel and schedule time for relaxation if it’s needed.
  • Be aware of ‘risky activities’ such as going to a place where you know you will be tempted to use again.
  • Do something different. Not drinking or using drugs shouldn’t mean you miss out on all the fun; instead look for activities you enjoy that don’t involve substances.
  • Remember your support network. Whether that’s family, friends or a support group, don’t lose touch.
  • Make a list of the reasons you quit or reduced in the first place and reward yourself for the hard work you have put in so far.
