Here are some tips for preventing a relapse of your hard work this festive season:
- Remember that relapse is a process, not an event. It doesn’t happen overnight so look out for the signs!
- The holidays can be a stressful time: talk to friends and family about how you feel and schedule time for relaxation if it’s needed.
- Be aware of ‘risky activities’ such as going to a place where you know you will be tempted to use again.
- Do something different. Not drinking or using drugs shouldn’t mean you miss out on all the fun; instead look for activities you enjoy that don’t involve substances.
- Remember your support network. Whether that’s family, friends or a support group, don’t lose touch.
- Make a list of the reasons you quit or reduced in the first place and reward yourself for the hard work you have put in so far.
