Vendor lashed for stealing The Voice
A newspaper vendor was last Friday lashed four times on his bare buttocks and spent his weekend in a police cell for stealing 100 copies of The Voice newspaper.
22- year- old Thusang Bontsibokae who is allegedly part of a syndicate which steals bundles of newspapers from media houses ran out of luck when a vigilant security guard at Pick n Pay supermarket which is along Blue Jacket street in Francistown saw him sneaking into the delivery van.
“I saw The Voice truck arriving and parking at the staff entrance. I am the one who let the driver into the shop and while he was inside I saw the truck canopy open, but could not see who was opening it. This aroused my curiosity, as I stepped outside to investigate that’s when I saw a man coming out of the truck carrying a bundle of newspapers.
When he realized that he had been seen he started running, he then dropped the papers so he could increase his speed but unfortunately for him, I caught him,” related the G4S security guard, John Modise.
After being caught the vendor cum thief did not hesitate to admit his crime.
“He begged me to forgive him saying he was only trying to help himself,” said Modise.
The young man who hails from Mabue appeared before Donga Customary Court on Monday morning was made to pay P750 for the 100 copies or be sent to prison for three months.
