Devastated family appeals for help against fire torment
A family in Mmathethe village in the Southern District have claimed that the fires that have been terrorising them since the early 90′s are mysterious and abnormal.
Appealing for help to rebuild their lives after losing household goods worth over P21 000 in a blaze recently, the devastated and traumatised Rapailane family told of how they have come to live in constant fear and poverty because of fire attacks.
Recounting her ordeal 45- year-old Keitumetse Rapailane, said: “ It seems someone who does not want us to own anything has cast an evil fire spell on us. The first time it struck was in 1990 when all that I owned was destroyed in my one roomed house. Then I was working in South Africa and all my furniture and clothing were burnt to ashes in that mysterious fire.”
Rapailane who works for the government drought relief scheme, ipelegeng said that she rebuilt the house following that fire but in 2009 another fire struck and nearly burnt her to death.
“I was preparing homemade floor polish and when I mixed cold paraffin with melted candle wax, the mixture exploded. At that same time the door closed and trapped me inside. Luckily I escaped with my life although I suffered terrible burns to my chest and arms,” Keitumetse further stated.
The last week fire outbreak however was the most mysterious of them all.“We have no electricity. Nothing was lit but strangely the fire started in the middle of my bed! Imagine if it had erupted at night when I was sleeping. People would be telling a different story right now,” said the shocked woman
Rapailane’s husband, Modibedi Rapilane, 52,also expressed shock at the fire incidents and feared for his wife’s life.
“Clearly the fire has been assigned to kill my wife. I believe it will only stop when she is dead, therefore I live in constant fear that the fire may erupt again when I am back in South Africa where I spend most of my time. That is why I have asked her to go and live with her mother for now,” Modibedi said.
