Maun man charged for shooting wife and son
A Maun man from Sedie ward has been slapped with two counts of negligence for shooting his wife and child by mistake on a hunting expedition
Gabanathuso Sarefo, 63 failed to take proper precautions against any probable danger from a 12 gauge loaded gun which went off in his hands and injured his wife and son on the legs.
Sarefo was hunting with his family at Daunara buffalo fence in North West Administration District when the accident occurred.
Initially he was charged with attempted murder but the charge sheet was later amended to two counts of negligence after the court heard of how the old man failed to take precautions measures when putting the gun down which caused the weapon to go off on its own and injure people.
The court further heard that after the shooting, the old man tried to cover up by claiming that the two injured themselves by falling and hurting themselves on a tree stump. He later admitted to the shooting and pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder charge.
“I do not know how the gun fired but I have been using it without causing any danger to anyone for many years,” he said prompting the court to amend the charged sheet.
He also wanted to tell the court what happened on the fateful day but was advised by Chief Magistrate Mompati Taolo to wait for the appropriate time to do so. He was asked to come for case management on October 15th.
