Residents of Ntlhantlhe village in the Southern District last week killed what they thought was a thokolosi yet it was just an animal which had wandered into the village looking for water.
It took a team of Wildlife officers to convince the villagers that the small creature was only a water animal, a clawless African otter, which is commonly found in the country’s wetlands.
“It then made logic because the village dam has dried up and the animal probably came to the village to look for food and water. It was found in the first yards from the dam,” explained the village chief, Kgosi Malepa Orekeng of Ntlhantlhe in an interview.
According to information gathered through the Internet, the animal fingers and toes have no claws, but have small growths reminiscent of human fingernails. However, even though it has five fingers on each paw, it does not have a thumb.
