A 32- year- old man from Senete recently committed suicide after tying his mother with a rope, locking her up in a hut before setting it on fire.

The man who is believed to have been drunk at the time burnt two more huts before disappearing into the bush where he was later found hanging near the river bank.

Neighbours said the man who stayed with his parents allegedly had a grudge with his mother and relatives who had a few days before disciplined him.

It is alleged that before the arson and suicide incident, the man was seriously punished and tortured by relatives after a dispute erupted between him and his mother.

Feeling cheated he went for a heavy drinking spree and came back at night wrecking havoc and nearly roasting his mother alive after tying up her before pushing her inside a burning hut.

A neighbour who spoke on anonymity said : “We understand he was also tortured with fire on the head and private parts by some of his relatives for harassing his mother over a credit which had not been paid. He never lodged a complaint with the police probably because he already had this plan up his sleeve.”

Tutume Police Station Commander Vusumusi Jorowe confirmed the incident saying the man’s body is currently at Tutume Primary Hospital awaiting post mortem.

“It looks like the man had a misunderstanding with his mother and decided to burn down three huts causing damage to property valued over P22 000 ,” he said.
