Botswana’s renowned international model, Kaone Kario has been taken for a ride by another well known internationally based Motswana who has not paid her for modeling services.
Kario allegedly fell victim to designer Koketso Chiepe after agreeing to participate at the Gaborone fashion weekend, but was never given the promised payment for the service.
Although Kario declined to disclose the amount owed, she did confirm that it was a lot of money.
“Yes she owes me money and my lawyers are dealing with it,” Kaone stated.
Kario is said to be among many models and businesses, including the Gaborone International Convention Centre (G.I.C.C) and a local travel agency who have allegedly been swindled by the top fashion designer.
In fact one of the cases is being handled by Gaborone West police station and its Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has confirmed.
The Officer in Charge of the CID, Superintendent Tlotlanang Mogwase said Chiepe, was busted by the Police for P18 250, old debt, she owes to the GICC.
The Police arrested the fashion celebrity immediately after the recent fashion show, which was held at Ditshupo hall in Gaborone and confiscated her travel documents.
“She was arrested at Ditshupo hall where she had a fashion show. She was detained at the Police station but was later released. We kept the travel documents so that she could not escape before the case was finalized.
“In March this year, the G.I.C.C management lodged a complaint against her following a series of empty promises to clear the balance. However it took long for us to make the arrest because the lady in question does not stay in the country. She travels the world,” Mogwase explained.
He said when they heard that she had organized another fashion show at Ditshupo hall last month they had an opportunity to pounce on her.
“We did not interrupt the show. Immediately after the show, when everybody was having their drinks, we pounced on her,” Mogwase further revealed.
He added that the G.I.C.C later had a gentleman’s agreement with Chiepe that she would settle the debt and they returned her travel documents.
At the time of going to print, efforts to get Chiepe’s side of the story were futile, as her phone was not going through.
