Keobonye Rangande from Toteng village was found guilty of rape two weeks ago and sentenced to ten years in prison
The 29- year- old man who was convicted for raping his 14- year old cousin failed to convince the court in his mitigation that there were extenuating circumstances to save him from a ten year jail term.
Handing down the sentence magistrate Clifford Foroma said that the 10 -year- jail term was not going to be a shocker to the society considering the gravity of the offence committed by Rangande.
The facts of the case are that on the 24th of December, 2008 around 8 o’clock iat night Rangande raped his 14- year old relative in Toteng.
When he was told of his right to register an appeal within 21 days, Rangande requested to put before the court a verbal appeal immediately but the court turned him down and set Thursday as his next day of appearance in court.
In his mitigation he asked the court to treat him as a first offender because he was acquitted from an armed robbery charge before.
He however had previous convictions that included, assault occasioning bodily harm, stealing from a person and breaking into a motor vehicle.
