Maun police are investigating a case in which a 38-year- old driver at Moeti Junior Secondary School shot himself to death  with a borrowed gun.

The deceased who was originally from Tutume village in the North East district was reported by relatives to have been troubled by serious marital problems that eventually drove him to commit suicide.

“He had more than one pending case of assault and bodily harm. He used to beat his wife a lot but we will never know the reason behind the fights because he didn’t want to talk about it until he was gone,” said a concerned relative.

District N0.5 Criminal Investigation Officer Superintendent Alakanani David said that the deceased used a friend’s gun to  blast his head off.

Superintendent David further noted that the owner of the gun    has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm because his permit had expired as well as unlawful transfer.

“We have realised that people exchange guns without following the required procedure and people therefore need to know that it is illegal to do that.”

To exchange a gun without seeking legal permission to do so attracts a  P2 000 fine or a year in prison for the gun owner  and a P250 fine or six months in imprisonment for the one who accepts such a gun without first seeking a temporary permit from the police, the superintendent explained.
