SUBMERGED: Car being retrieved from pond
Three men from Maun almost drowned on Sunday afternoon when the vehicle they were in reversed into a pond after one of them accidentally started its engine.
The three, aged between 20 and 27 were having fun at the famous Shashe Bridge Pond when the incident happened.
According to a witness one of the men wanted to light a cigarette and instead of putting the ignition key on to supply electricity to the cigarette lighter, he started the car engine.
“Because he doesn’t know how to drive he stepped onto the accelerator instead of breaks and also failed to stop the engine resulting in the car reversing into the pond,” said the witness.
Only one of the man managed to swim while the other two hung onto the carrier of the car until they were saved by the Special Support Group.
All the three men were not available for a comment.
Maun Acting Station Commander Assistant Superitandant Zhabi Hulela confirmed the incident adding that the owner of the 4×4 van may be charged for giving his car to somebody without a driver’s licence.
He also expressed concern over the high number of incidents that happen in the area “People go there and drink alcohol but they have to know that the place is not an entertainment place and we will soon start raiding and fining those found having fun in the spot
