A diarrhoea outbreak in Maun which killed 17 babies in two weeks has been halted,Letsholathebe Hospital Superintendent Maxwell Mungisi has said.
As an indication that the severe diarrhoea causing rotavirus has been put under control, 84 cases we reported at the hospital this week compared to 173 cases that were recorded last week with only one of the cases being fatal.
“ There is a vaccine called Rota Virus, which is also the name of the virus, which we are giving to children under the age of five to prevent them from catching it up to next year,” said Dr Mungisi
The doctor however warned that administering the vaccine does not mean that parents should stop taking other necessary health precautions like washing hands after using toilets because the most known way of contracting the virus was by transfer from faeces to mouth. “Parents should also give babies and children purified water at all times.” Dr Mungisi advised.
