Cop kills colleague before turning gun on himself

Molepolole police were on Wednesday left shaken following a murder and suicide incident in which a Sub-Inspector shot dead an Inspector before killing himself.

Shocked eye-witnesses told of how the 38-year old Sub-Inspector who had been under police investigations for fraudulent acts involving money meant for members of various  crime prevention clusters in Molepolole shot his 37-year old superior on the face before taking his own life.

“He was being investigated for the money that he had obtained fraudulently and when he heard that he was going to be detained he went and took his rifle and drove to the Police District No.11 Headquarters where he found and shot dead the Inspector who was the leader of the investigating team. After that he drove to the Molepolole Police Station which is about 400 metres away from the District Office. He was looking for other members of the investigating team- an Inspector and a Constable, but by the time he got there we had been told of his intention and everyone ran for cover and that was when he shot himself on the head,” said a police officer who did not want to be named for fear of reprisals.

The enraged killer cop had been a Section leader of an Anti-Stock theft group that recently won a murder case after members of his section were accused of killing a cattle thief. They were discharged and acquitted after they claimed that the thief had jumped off a moving vehicle.

The victim was based at Police Headquarters in Gaborone and worked under the Internal Section that investigates misdeeds within the police service while the other Inspector and Constable are stationed in Molepolole.

Police Public Relations Officer, Christopher Mbulawa confirmed the incident after shootings on Wednesday afternoon. “The police investigations as to what could have caused the misunderstanding that led to the fatal shooting are continuing. The assailant used a privately licensed shotgun to commit the murder and suicide. The names of the two officers, a Sub-Inspector and an Inspector are still withheld until their next of kin have been informed,” he said in a media  release.

The assailant was said to be from Mmutlane village in the Central District while the deceased was from Makaleng village in the North-East.
