A man who stabbed his girl-friend with a screwdriver at the height of a dispute over the couple’s baby got away with a suspended sentence on Monday.
Tempering justice with mercy, Magistrate Peggy Madandume sentenced the 23- year-old security officer to a 12 months jail term, which was set aside on condition that he did not commit a similar offence within that period. The court heard that, Lebalang Mpikiwa, went berserk attacking the mother of his child, Hwananani Maphorisa with fists before plunging a screwdriver into the woman’s tummy sometime in July, early this year.
Maphorisa fainted with the weapon wedged in her body and Mpikiwa, assuming she was dead surrendered himself to the Kutlwano police in Francistown. The woman was later rushed to Nyangabwe Referral Hospital where the screw driver was removed and her life was saved. When the magistrate pronounced the wholly suspended jail term, Mpikiwa heaved a sigh of relief and smiled.
Later on, he swore that the will never use a weapon again in a fight. In mitigation, the security guard had said that he was the bread winner for both his family and that of his victim. “Both the two families, the Maphorisas and mine depend on me so they would suffer a lot if I was to be sent to prison. I would lose my job if I was to be kept behind bars for a prolonged period and both families would be doomed,”he said
The young man told the court that he lost his temper and attacked his ex-lover after she had refused to let him spend time with his baby at his house.
Inspector Obrie Mmereki of Kutlwano Police station prosecuted.
